Let's have a brief summary of some important points of Ray Optics Formula Sheet Class 12 Physics.
1) Ray of Light
The straight line path along which light travels in a homogeneous medium is called a ray.
2) REFLECTION OF LIGHT
The phenomenon in which a light ray is sent back into the same medium from which it is coming, on interaction with a boundary, is called reflection. The boundary can be a rigid surface or just an interface between two media.
3) Laws of Reflection
(i) Angle of incidence : The angle which the incident ray makes with normal at the point of incidence.
(ii) Angle of reflection : The angle which the reflected ray makes with normal at the point of incidence.
A reflected ray lies in the plane of incidence and has an angle of reflection equal to the angle of incidence.
4) REFRACTION OF LIGHT
When a ray of light is incident on the boundary between two transparent media, a part of it passes into the second medium with a change in direction. This phenomenon is called refraction.
5) Refractive Index
Absolute refractive index of a medium is defined by the ratio of speed of light in vacuum to the speed of light in the medium.
6) Law of Refraction (Snell’s Law)
A refracted ray lies in the plane of incidence and sin of angle of incidence = sin of angle of refraction.
7) Rules of Refraction
- Light going from Denser to Rarer medium will bend away from normal.
- Light going from Rarer to Denser medium will bend towards the normal.
8) Total Internal Reflection
When refraction of light does not take place, only reflection of light takes place. This is called total internal reflection
Condition for TIR
• Light must travel from denser medium to rare medium.
• The angle of incidence must be greater than the critical angle.
9) Optical Fibre
Optical fibre is a device based on the principle of internal reflection it can transmit light signals from one point to another with very little loss of light intensity. It consists of two main parts core and cladding.
Core is the central cylindrical wire having diameter of the order micrometers and cladding is the layer of a material of slightly lower refractive index than core of the optical fibre.
10) Ray Diagrams - Thin Lenses
➝ The light rays parallel to principal axis meets at the focal point after passing through a lens.
➝ The light rays parallel to each other and parallel to the principal axis meet at the focal plane of the lens after passing through it.
➝ A Ray of light passing through the optical centre of the lens goes straight.
11) Refraction from Spherical Surface

12) Lens Formula
Lens formula relates object distance(u), image distance(v) and focal length(f) of a thin lens as given below:
